Recipients

Congratulations to Andrew Jones of Mackinac Island and Grand Ledge, Michigan for his "Soldiers of Mackinac" winning submission. Andrew, born and raised on the island, submitted his paper on the soldiers' life on Mackinac when he was in his senior year at the Mackinac Island Public School.

This work is a statistical comparison of three different companies of soldiers that served at the fort. The project was designed to give Andy an opportunity to research primary resource documents, analyze their content and write a comparative analysis as a Senior school project. Andy painstakingly extracted data from several military documents. The compilation of this data, presented in his appendices, is a very strong part of his final report.

According to Phil Porter, Director of Mackinac State Historic Parks and Martin Petersen Fund for Historical Writing selection committee member, "the real success of this endeavor has been to feed Andy's desire to learn more about the process of studying history. The self motivation, enthusiasm and hard work that he demonstrated throughout this project will greatly benefit him as he pursues an academic career in history."
